Jawbreakin Julie #2
(Groovy Back-Up Feature)
Published by my good friend Reg Stacey
in 1998. At some time late in my university years, I was contracted to
create a character for a DJ to use in his advertising. He wanted something
very 70's and in an anime style. Ultimately his partner vetoed the idea, and
I ended up with the artwork. Reg noticed it one day and asked if he could
use it as the logo character for his publishing "umbrella". I said sure,
under the condition that he let me have 3 pages to use the character in a
back-up feature. Needless to say, he didn't take much convincing.
Looking back, the Groovy stuff is
notable as one of the few published examples of my humorous work. I don't
recall setting out to make BPBC a home for strictly serious work, but it
kind of ended up like that. Anyways, a lot of the stuff I did with Groovy
has its origins in some really bad parody comics I did way back in
high-school that I hope never see the light of day.
While I was originally supposed to
follow this 3 pager up with other back-up features for Reg, it never quite
worked out that way. While Monkey-Boy's next appearance in print would be in
the Captain Collision Halloween Special, Groovy has yet to make his way back
onto the published page. I have an idea for a Jawbreakin Julie/Groovy
cross-over special called Swampland Wonderland, so maybe he'll be back
someday...
