Captain Collision Halloween Special
(Monkey-Boy Totem and Cap in
Jotunheim)
Published in 1999 by Groovy Comics, the
Captain Collision Halloween Special was, in my humble opinion, a very
successful experiment in anthology storytelling. All of the credit for how
the finished book turned out has to go to my good friend Reg Stacey. I won't
go into it too much here, but the basic premise was that each creator should
start and end their story segment with a transitional black panel to allow
Reg to order the stories as he saw fit once they had been submitted. He then
essentially constructed an overall narrative by ordering the pieces and
adding a suitable ending. For more info on this book, check out Reg's
website.
As for my contribution, I submitted a
one page set-up and a six page feature. The Set-up page casts Monkey-Boy as
both shaman and totem spirit to the good Captain, and is basically just a
set-up for a 3 panel gag in the feature. I have to admit tho, that I really
had fun with the 3 panels after Captain Collision smokes the peyote.
The idea for the feature came from an
old coverless dog-eared copy of Thor that I had, that reprinted his origin
story. In it, Dr. Blake was vacationing somewhere in Norway when Earth was
attacked by giant aliens. While trying to hide from the invaders, Blake
breaks his cane and falls down a hole into a cave where he finds a gnarled
old walking stick. The stick of course turns out to be Mjolnir, the hammer
of Thor. Blake eventually discovers that the hammer turns him into Thor, and
he then goes off to kick some giant alien butt. Anyway, the obvious
connection between Cap. Collision's hammers and the hammer of Thor bit
really just gave me an excuse to have some fun with a super-heroic beat
down. I felt kinda bad for the giant tho, he doesn't really do anything to
deserve the Cap's wrath.
